Going Blonde? Here's Everything You Need to Know First

Balayage, foilayage, highlights, lived-in color, full lift — the paths to blonde are not all the same. This guide covers every option so you walk into your consultation knowing exactly what to ask for.

Blonding is the most requested color category at Tangerine — and the one with the widest range of possible outcomes. "I want to go lighter" can mean sun-kissed babylights that barely register as color-treated, or it can mean a full platinum transformation that requires multiple sessions and a committed maintenance plan. Understanding the difference before your consultation means you leave with exactly what you pictured, not an approximation of it.

This is the starting point. It covers all the primary blonding techniques Tangerine's Aveda-trained colorists use, explains who each one is right for, and links into the deeper posts where you can research the specific options that match your hair goals. By the end, you'll know exactly what to ask for — and why.

The Five Blonding Paths

01 Most Popular

Balayage

Balayage (from the French "to sweep") is a freehand painting technique where lightener is hand-applied to the surface of the hair — heavier at the ends, lighter near the roots. The result is a soft, graduated blonde that mimics how hair naturally lightens in the sun. No hard line at the root, which means it grows out beautifully and requires fewer refresh appointments than foil work.

Balayage is the technique behind most "natural blonde" results you see in photos — seamless, dimensional, never stripey. It's Tangerine's most requested service and the foundation of the low-maintenance blonde the DCC relies on through a full performance season.

Best for: Sun-kissed, natural results · Low-maintenance grow-out · First-time blonding
Maintenance: Major refresh every 3–5 months · Toner gloss every 6–8 weeks

02 Maximum Lift

Foilayage

Foilayage combines balayage's freehand painting with the heat amplification of foils. Lightener is applied the same way as balayage, but the section is wrapped in foil — trapping heat and driving the lightener deeper, achieving significantly more lift than open-air balayage alone.

The result is brighter and more uniform than classic balayage while still maintaining a soft, rooted look. For guests who want a noticeably blonde result — not just a hint of brightness — foilayage is the technique. It's also the preferred method for lifting darker base colors where open-air balayage alone won't reach the target level.

Best for: Bright, high-contrast blonde · Darker starting bases · More lift than balayage delivers
Maintenance: Every 8–14 weeks depending on desired contrast

03 Classic

Traditional Highlights

Foil highlights section off individual strands and lift them from root to tip, creating precise, uniform brightness throughout. Unlike balayage which concentrates color on the mid-lengths and ends, traditional highlights start at the root — making them the technique of choice when overall brightness and maximum coverage are the goal.

Babylights — ultra-fine highlight sections that mimic the multi-tonal look of childhood hair — fall in this category. They create the most natural-looking brightness available from foil work and are often layered with balayage for complex, dimensional results.

Best for: Consistent, even brightness · Root-to-tip lightening · Babylight dimension
Maintenance: Every 6–10 weeks for root touch-ups

04 Low Maintenance

Lived-In Color

Lived-in color isn't a single technique — it's a design philosophy that combines balayage, babylights, and root melting to create color that looks beautiful as it grows out, with no visible line of demarcation. The goal is hair that appears to simply exist that way, not freshly colored.

It typically features a softer, slightly darker root transitioning through blended mid-lengths to lighter ends. For guests who space appointments four to six months apart and want to look polished the entire time, this is the approach. See our lived-in color guide for a specific example in action.

Best for: Maximum grow-out grace · Guests spacing appointments 4–6+ months
Maintenance: Major refresh every 4–6 months

05 Dramatic Change

Full Lift / Platinum

Full lift services involve lifting the entire base or large portions of it to the lightest levels — platinum, icy blonde, high-contrast bleached looks. This is the highest-commitment blonding category. On darker bases it typically requires multiple sessions, Aveda's most powerful lightening formulas, and an active treatment routine throughout the process.

Done correctly — over the right timeline with proper treatment support — full lift results are achievable on most hair types. Tangerine's colorists build a session-by-session roadmap for full lift clients and always recommend pre-appointment preparation to protect hair integrity before each lightening session.

Best for: Platinum, icy blonde, dramatic transformation
Maintenance: Every 4–8 weeks · Active treatment routine required

06 Tone Refresh

Gloss & Toning

Toning isn't a standalone blonding technique, but it's a critical part of every blonding service. After any lightening service, a toner or gloss is applied to neutralize brassiness, dial in the exact shade of blonde, and seal the cuticle for dramatically improved shine.

Most blonding appointments at Tangerine include a toning step. Between appointments, a glossing treatment every 6–8 weeks cancels the orange and yellow that oxidation produces over time — keeping blonde looking expensive without requiring a full color service.

Best for: All blonded hair · Brassiness elimination · Shine and tone maintenance
Maintenance: Every 6–8 weeks as a standalone service

What the Blonding Process Actually Looks Like

Understanding the process sets accurate expectations — and guests who understand what's happening get better results because they're prepared for each step. Here's the typical sequence for a first-time blonding client at Tangerine:

Step 01

Consultation First

Before any lightener touches your hair, your stylist assesses your base level, hair history, porosity, and condition. This determines which technique is appropriate, how many sessions are realistic, and what the first appointment can safely achieve. Our pre-appointment prep guide covers what to bring and what to expect.

Step 02

Pre-Treatment

For any significant lightening service, Tangerine recommends an Aveda Botanical Repair treatment the night before your appointment. This builds the hair's protein bonds before they're stressed by lightener — resulting in less breakage and better elasticity throughout the process.

Step 03

Lightening Application

Your stylist applies lightener using the technique determined in consultation — balayage, foilayage, or foils. Aveda's lightening formulas are up to 96% naturally derived, formulated to achieve the target level while minimizing damage to the hair's structural integrity.

Step 04

Toning

After lifting, a toner or gloss neutralizes brassiness and lands on the exact target shade — whether that's icy, champagne, golden, or warm blonde. This step is what makes the difference between "bleached" and "beautiful." It's included in most blonding appointments.

Step 05

At-Home Maintenance Plan

Before you leave, your stylist walks you through the at-home maintenance your new blonde requires — which toning shampoo, which masque, gloss frequency, and when to come back. Our color maintenance guide covers the full breakdown.

Why Aveda Color for Blonding Specifically

Lightening hair is chemically demanding regardless of the formula used. The question is how the formula manages the process — and Aveda's approach is meaningfully different from conventional lighteners. Aveda's professional lightening system uses naturally derived ingredients including meadowsweet and plant-based conditioning agents that work alongside the lightening chemistry to maintain hair integrity throughout the lift, rather than simply bleaching and leaving the rest to chance.

The result compounds over time: guests who maintain a consistent Aveda color routine — including in-salon treatment support and the recommended at-home maintenance products — retain their hair's elasticity and shine across repeated lightening sessions far better than guests using conventional formulas. For blonde clients returning every 8–12 weeks, this difference is significant over a year of appointments.

Aveda's commitment to plant-based ingredients extends to the lightening and color lines — not just the retail products. The same formulation standards apply in the color bowl as in the bottles on your shelf.

The Blonde Standard Set by the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders

Maintaining camera-ready blonde on 36 performers through a full performance season — game days, appearances, and Netflix filming — requires a color system that holds up under repeated lightening, heat styling, and Texas humidity. Tangerine has served as the Official Salon of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders since 2016, and the Aveda blonding protocols developed for the DCC are the same ones our colorists use for every guest. The same techniques. The same products. The same standard.
