James Fiero Styling Awards

Creativity | Honor | Dedication

“This styling competition between our locations was created to cultivate creativity and teamwork. The trophy is named after our beloved team member – James Fiero - who passed away in 2013 and who was the epitome of Tangerine's culture of creativity.”

– Brandon Hensley; Owner, Tangerine Salon

Each year, Tangerine holds a styling competition meant to inspire the stylists to exercise their artistic abilities, to push the boundaries of hair, and to embrace team unity. The four different Tangerine locations each compete for the honor of winning. They are required to submit 5 photos for each team that share in a central theme. They team up with photographer Frank Marrott of Concept 7 Photography to shoot their collection. Adrian Franco, Senior Level Stylist at Tangerine Salon in Coppell says, “For us it's a way to step away from the everyday 'salon' stuff and do something different.” This year, the stylists left nothing behind as they gave it their all to produce final products that wowed the audience.

Team Dallas

*2016 Winning Team*

Theme: Her Majesty

Creative Team: Marshall Hatley, Kevin Walsh, John Ball, Ashley York, Troy Hunt, Sara Heng, Duc Nguyen, Cierra Starnes

The Dallas Salon worked together to produce a photo set inspired by the queens of the world, including a British Matriarch, an Egyptian Goddess, a Chinese Empress, a Nordic Valkyrie, and a Rani of India. The hair, wardrobe, and makeup lend to poised images that communicate their vision.

Kevin Walsh, Master Level Stylist, took point on the project and was inspired by the sheer power of women and the beautiful, soft feminine qualities that hide a world of power behind them. The diversity of each look may make the women stand apart, but the intense energy and grace they hold unites them all.

Team Highland Village

Theme: Birds on a Wire

Creative Team: Jill Ottinger, Annie Patton, Jac Hickman, Christina Childress, Courtney Winnan, Bobbi Willmon, Bridgette Poppe, Robin Philpott, Nicki Gazlay, Melissa Audas

Team Highland Village drew their inspiration from the feathers of a black bird to produce a series of captivating images. Each photograph features a child donning black clothing with feathers of black, blue, and green hues. The combination of color, youth, and hair styling create 5 very striking images.

“Highland Village works really well as a team and this year was great for us as we all really loved our concept! Photoshoot day went smoothly and we couldn’t ask for better models. They were all such little gems to work with.” – Jill Ottinger, Senior Level Stylist.

Team Coppell

Theme: Unity

Creative Team: Theresa O'Brien, Adrian Franco, Allison Whetstone, Paula Pederson, Michelle Peebles, Janet Hensley, Caitlin Kelly, Katie Oosterhouse, Annie Wolfe, Grace Smith, K'Lin Pierce, Kristina Fierro, Maria Cole

The Coppell Stylists felt that in a world divided, they would use their photos to unite diversity. “We decided to show that through picking a few different cultures and bringing them together through the images,” says Theresa McCaffrey, Master Level Stylist.  Representing different cultures from around the world, each photograph in this series features a very different styled look, but they all share the same beauty. Through showcasing the uniqueness of these women while grouping them together, team Coppell was able to show the need for unity among all mankind.

Team Allen

Theme: Generation XX

Creative Team: Gulan Barwarii, Erin Crawford, Noel Gawrysiak, Sara Mahaffey, Kristen Mize, Sara Munoz, Lauren Philips, Sandy Roque, Cierra Starnes, Sophie Streight, Kari Wawrzonek, Arin Akin

Inspired by the popularity of post-apocalyptic worlds seen in literature, tv, and film, Team Allen wanted to capture the grung feeling of these scenarios. They brought in a steampunk feel to jazz it up a bit and give it a creative twist.

According to Kari Wawrzonek, Master Level Stylist, they went with a more common theme that opened up the opportunities for each stylist involved to really express their creativity. Through vintage clothing, repurposed accessories, hair styling, and makeup, team Allen created 5 looks that are 'Hunger Games meets New York Fashion Week'.
